THE AIM OF THE PAPER
New research challenges are emerging because platform architectures have become increasingly
complex and platforms have proliferated across numerous industries. The definition of a complex
platform is not uniform in the literature. The concept of a platform can be approached from
multiple perspectives. Our research aims to present the most commonly used platform definitions
and systematize them into a complex platform definition that highlights the essence of existing
platforms. In our study, we aim to establish a theoretical foundation for the concept of platforms,
in order to define the attributes associated to them. These attributes will enable the classification of
platform groups, furthermore, allowing any given platform to be assigned to a specific group.
METHODOLOGY
The research methodology is a systematic literature review, analyzing the most commonly cited
platform definitions from different perspectives. Additionally, a new classification criterion
is introduced, in order to define the concept of a complex platform. Platform groups are based
on a general qualitative model, allowing for the analysis and evaluation of a platform’s current
status. They help pinpoint areas that need improvement, facilitate monitoring of progress, and offer
guidance for future development. Accordingly, an effective examination is ensured by a hierarchical
review of existing classification models.
MOST IMPORTANT RESULTS
In the past decade, complex platforms have developed at an unprecedented pace, profoundly
transforming not only the economy but also our daily lives. The past few decades have been
unprecedented in the growth and significance of the platform economy worldwide. Based on this,
we will formulate a functionality-based complex platform definition that combines the key elements
of platform definitions found in the literature.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The application of the platforms also brings about improvements in competitiveness and all its
dimensions. It is also worthwhile to push companies towards an online presence in certain industries,
to make managers understand the importance of this, and to encourage them to create a corporate
platform or at least to use social media more effectively.
