Abstract

THE AIM OF THE PAPER

A concern about the attitudes of young workers entering the labour market can be identified in a number of international literatures. Our research aimed to explore the extent to which attitudes towards work among Hungarian workers are sharply differentiated between younger and older age groups, and to identify the key explanatory variables that may influence high or low levels of work morale.

METHODOLOGY

In our questionnaire survey, we interviewed 150 workers who form statistically well-measured homogeneous groups by age. Using mixed statements on Likert scale, we measured the direct factors related to work - according to our model: job satisfaction, commitment, pay, working circumtances. Multivariate statistical procedures and correspondence analysis were used to examine the research questions and test the hypotheses.

MOST IMPORTANT RESULTS

Based on the results of our study, there is no evidence of a supposed difference in work attitudes between age groups. Therefore, the stereotype that young people have a lower work morale is not true, as no significant difference between younger and older age groups can be identified from this point of view. Attitudes towards work are primarily influenced by job satisfaction, followed by commitment, pay and working circumstances.

RECOMMENDATIONS

It would be important for professionals, managers and HR experts to communicate to older employees that they should not view young people entering the labour market as unmotivated, uninterested colleagues, but as partners worth working with, since there are a significant number of people with the same good attitude as among the older generation. One of the causes of the generational frictions and conflicts that are developing in the Hungarian labour market (partly for demographic reasons) is rooted in the - often wrong - way of thinking about young people and older people. These should be clarified through education, training, communication, information and the shaping of core values.
