THE AIM OF THE PAPER
The aim of our paper is to summarize the personal characteristics and environmental influences that determine public attitudes towards drones in public services. By reviewing the international research and methodological literature on the subject, we have identified the environmental influences and individual factors that can be examined to understand the attitudes of the population towards drones. A pilot research was carried out among the population of Western Transdanubia on two of the main effects, the area of use and the perception of safety, with gender and generational differences.
METHODOLOGY
The methodology used was a secondary and primary quantitative online survey with 502 respondents. The data collection was between September and October 2023. The sample is representative of the population of the region by gender and by the generational groups studied, according to KSH data. Statistical methods were cross tabulation analysis, analysis of variance, principal component analysis and factor analysis.
MOST IMPORTANT RESULTS
In our study, we summarised the personal characteristics and environmental influences that determine public attitudes towards drones in public services. From our primary research, we have highlighted the factors outlined in the environmental impact model, namely area of use (impersonal environmental element) and perception of safety (personal characteristic). Along the lines of public opinion, we distinguished between crime prevention and rescue applications and found that rescue applications were less highly rated by respondents in terms of the usefulness of drone use. In terms of generations, middle generations and women were more supportive of drone use.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Differences between the expected utility of each use and the perception of drone use efficiency by the associated organisations suggest that public awareness raising is necessary and expected in the use of drones for public purposes.
