THE AIM OF THE PAPER
The emergence of an environmentally aware consumer class depends to a large extent on the level of social and economic development of the country and the regulatory environment in the region. The aim of this research is to clarify the state of environmental awareness on the path to mainstreaming. To this end, we will review the theoretical constructs (trickle-up, -down and -accross theories and upscaling) that support our understanding of the diffusion phenomena, as well as the impact of the regulatory environment and the literature on the diffusion of sustainable consumption. Through our comparative primary analysis, we also show how environmentally conscious attitudes and behaviour have evolved over time in the Hungarian context.
METHODOLOGY
In the first phase of our empirical research, we conducted empirical research in May 2023 using an online questionnaire survey, based on a student sample (N=110) and interpreted the evolution of environmentally conscious behaviour using the PEB (Pro-Environmental Behavior) scale, compared to previous results of Nagy (2018).
MOST IMPORTANT RESULTS
Our results show that recycling, selective waste collection and the consumption of environmentally friendly products are the most common in our sample. Comparing with the 2018 results, we found a difference in the orders of reducing the consumption of traditional goods, adjusting demand, and environmentally conscious complaint and protest. However, we measured a small shift at the level of each type of behaviour.
RECOMMANDATION
Our results show that the most typical environmental behaviours are now widespread and part of our everyday life. The need for deeper commitment and active engagement may be a barrier to the spread of the least common actions. Even so, our study highlights that green mainstreaming, or upscaling, is inevitable, even if consumers do not necessarily choose green alternatives. Our results are forward-looking because an understanding of sustainable consumer behaviour is central to paradigm shifts in the way society approaches environmental problems.
