THE AIM OF THE PAPER
The rapidly changing 21st century presents humanity with new challenges. While the negative consequences of globalisation are increasingly being felt, economic crises, pandemics and war conflicts continue to shape our daily lives. An economic shift towards sustainable development
is becoming increasingly necessary. According to experts, the circular economy and its sub-areas should replace linear methods, thus becoming part of the solution. Industrial symbiosis is a study of circular processes between companies and could become a key area in the future. This has implications for the business model of companies, for the way they create value. This paper explores this interaction.
METHODOLOGY
The authors conducted a systematic literature review utilising the Web of Science database. In the next step, PRISMA method was used. The 57 pieces included in the final set of scientific articles were then examined in two steps. First, the most important keywords and areas were visualised using the VOSViewer program, followed by a description of good practices.
MOST IMPORTANT RESULTS
The systematic literature review highlighted the relevancy of the subject. The international scientific literature has already described a number of good practices from several countries around the world. Companies that implement industrial symbiosis, transform their processes and create value with mutual trust and close cooperation. They can choose from a range of implementation options, including cross-sectoral and intra-sectoral cooperation. The potential of the concept roots in this flexibility.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The first step in creating industrial symbiosis solutions is the will to change. Once this is in place, companies can analyse their processes in detail to identify key areas where there is a real opportunity for collaboration. Access to information is key in this phase. The main objective of this study is to expand the literature available in Hungarian, which can contribute to a wider dissemination of information and to a paradigm shift, which is an important first step towards sustainable development.
