Abstract

THE AIM OF THE PAPER

The aim of this study is to examine the impact of Industry 4.0, digitalization on domestic agri-food supply chains through a previous bibliometric analysis of identified research directions.

METHODOLOGY

A qualitative research methodology was used to conduct the empirical research. For the analysis, we conducted 20 interviews with agri-food supply chain actors, from raw material producers to processors and retailers, in order to gain practical insights on the potential and impact of different digital solutions through our analytical framework developed as a result of a systematic literature review.

MOST IMPORTANT RESULTS

Our results highlight the need for sector-specific digital strategies, highlighting the role of digitalisation in improving operational flexibility, reliability and resilience. The results also highlight the need for coordinated action at the supply chain level, not only towards the consumer but also in reverse processes, so that digitalisation can play a prominent role in supporting waste management issues in the design of sustainable and traceable processes.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The study aims to raise awareness among policy makers of the need to prioritise improving food safety and traceability standards in food supply chains. It also recommends promoting sustainable practices through regulation and incentives, including renewable energy projects and waste reduction initiatives. Finally, we consider it of high importance to support investment in digital infrastructure and training programmes to foster innovation and increase productivity.
