Literary recognition is one of the most valuable of the Nobel Prizes, both professionally and financially. To date, five great authors from the African continent have received the Nobel Prize in Literature: • Albert Camus (Algeria), 1957 • Wole Soyinka (Nigeria), 1986 • Nagib Mahfouz (Egypt), 1988 • Nadine Gordimer (South Africa), 1991 • JM Coetzee (South Africa), 2003
