Abstract

The image of a man dressed in white, with his head covered by a white scarf, and his hands and left foot hidden, holds significant symbolic meaning in Senegal's visual culture and has altered the belief system of a community in the country. The article explores the life and religious teachings of Amadou Bamba, known by several names, and illustrates how he became an iconic figure in the Murid religion and Senegal's cultural heritage, whose images have spread as religious symbols within the Murid community, conveying blessings and good fortune, despite Islam’s prohibition.
