Abstract

In the last decade, the development of information technologies and the widespread adoption of
mobile technologies and Web 2.0 have facilitated the rise of a new socioeconomic system referred
to as the sharing economy and the emergence of P2P sharing platforms. One of the most affected
sectors by the sharing economy is the tourism and hospitality industry, where Airbnb – the leading
P2P accommodation sharing platform – has quickly become a viable alternative to hotels, hostels,
or bed and breakfasts and a major competitor to the traditional accommodation sector. As a result,
understanding the motivation of tourists for choosing Airbnb became crucial both from practical
and theoretical perspectives. The main aim of the study is to shed light on the travel habits of
Hungarian tourists and reveal what motivates them to choose accommodation on the Airbnb
platform instead of using traditional accommodations. During the research, we conducted an online
questionnaire survey which resulted in a final sample size of 829 questionnaires. Our results show,
that more than 35 percent of the respondents have already used the services of Airbnb and the main
influencing factors proved to be the price and the location of the accommodation, while the number
of pictures from the accommodation and personal information about the host had the smallest
impact on the tourists.
