Abstract

On the basis of economic processes-based service-dominant logic theory (SDL) (VARGO-LUSCH 2004a),
and the further-developed customer-dominant logic (CDL) theory that focuses on the customer's role as a
core element and critiques the basic theory (HEINONEN et al. 2010), art and ruin pubs are investigated as a
tourist attraction, and explored through qualitative in-depth interviews (N = 95). The research creates a
definition of art and ruin pubs based on consumer perceptions and uses an abductive and holistic framework
to model the components and interactions of the service experience, as well as to identify the ‘search for
thematic experience’ segments that contribute to the creation of strategy. Results apply to the connection
between and relevance of traditional marketing servicescape concepts, and the limitation of resource
integration and the value co-creation conception of SDL theory. Moreover, the relevance and adaptability of
CDL is shown through the only indirect participation of the consumer.
