Abstract

THE AIM OF THE PAPER

The challenges faced by leaders have emerged in almost every area of our socio-economic life. Today, more researchers have started to examine the leadership measures taken to address these challenges. However, less attention has been paid to the assessment of competencies so far.

The study aims to demonstrate how the importance of leadership competencies will change in the future due to the pandemic, which competencies will become more critical, and which ones will need more emphasis during leadership development. Based on the literature review results, we formulated two research questions: firstly, are there significant differences among the examined leadership competencies in terms of their future importance, and secondly, can significant differences be identified in the importance of leadership competencies based on the examined criteria?.

METHODOLOGY

The purpose of the nationwide online survey is to assess expectations regarding leadership competencies. The sample of 500 individuals represents those with residence in Hungary, aged between 21 and 65, and possessing a higher education degree. The survey, conducted by NetPanel.hu CAWI service in July 2021, was analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 28.0.0.0 (190) version.

MOST IMPORTANT RESULTS

Based on the results, significant differences were found among various competencies regarding their future importance. According to respondents, digital competencies, as well as change and crisis management, are the competencies expected to gain the most value. Significant differences were identified based on gender regarding the importance of leadership competencies. In contrast, no significant differences concerning age, settlement type, region, income, employment status, and professional experience were found.

The study is one of the few publications focusing on the new directions in leadership competency development after a crisis.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The above results draw attention to the importance of future leadership competencies and can also influence the training of future leaders. The findings support leadership career aspirations, emphasizing the importance of awareness of future leadership competencies for building a successful leadership career.
