The trial of 42 defendants, including several prominent figures, accused of illegal arms trafficking for Angola, illegal oil smuggling and corruption began in Paris on 6 October 2008. The investigation into the case lasted more than seven years, with French prosecutors submitting their thousands-page indictment to the court in April 2007.
