Abstract

If in the 19th century Britain was considered the “workshop of the world,” with its huge trade surplus and advanced industry, then China also deserves the title as the world’s number one producer of goods after the Cold War. For China, with its rich history, the 19th and much of the 20th centuries were a period of complete decline, impoverishment, and isolation.
