Abstract

Our goals were to give a complete overview of the changes caused by COVID-19 in the
travelling habits of the Hungarian inhabitants in 2020, furthermore how the pandemic
influences their plans in 2021. Consumer opinions and mapping of changes in their travelling
decisions were carried out in primary research, which included a quantitative research method
with a questionnaire survey among the Hungarian travellers. Our results show that the global
pandemic had a large impact on the travelling habits of the domestic population. We found
significant differences in every age group and in other demographic parameter in terms of
frequency, date, length, goals, motivation, modes of organization of traveling, persons traveling
together, and types of the chosen accommodation before and during the period of pandemic.
Getting out of quarantine as a new kind of motivation appeared in 2020. The consumers'
travelling plans became much braver for 2021 in every demographic group. This year,
Hungarian inhabitants are planning to make up for their postponed and missing journeys.
Hygiene is still remain as important in 2021 as it was in 2020.
