Abstract

The role of automation in passenger transport has become increasingly outstanding in recent years,
and technological development affects the future of all mobility services and industries. Starting
from the accumulating impacts of this transformation, this study aims to present the social impacts
of automation in passenger transport, focusing on self-driving cars and especially on tourism.
During secondary research to explore the topic, journals investigating self-driving cars and various
mobility services were analyzed. According to the results, besides the development of self-driving
cars, the spread of shared mobility can have a significant impact on future passenger transport.
Based on our research, four scenarios have been developed that primarily outline the impacts of
self-driving cars and shared mobility on consumer behavior. In our study, the possible behavioral
alterations are presented that can be associated with technological advances, as well as possible
innovations in tourism (e.g. expanding target group, auto-tour sightseeing) and challenges (e.g.
traditional traveling patterns, changing importance of the hotel industry, etc.), which support
further empirical researches.
