The Incomplete Remembrance of a Replacement at a Teacher Training College in the Years around the Hungarian Millennium

The number of studies about the remembrance of pedagogical history has grown in recent times. These mostly cover the topics of autobiography, teachers’ identity and the history of educational institutions. The focus of the present study is Imre Schultz, the late director of the Teachers’ Training Institution of Pécs, and the story of his replacement in 1885.
The remaining sources about this event paint a varied picture. These include the history of the institution, an autobiography, newspaper articles and reports of school inspectors. This micro-historical analysis attempts to reveal the controversial circumstances of the replacement of the director by comparingrepresentative texts and archival documents. The study reveals that the organizational issues of the college lie in the background of the different stories. In addition to the exploration of the events, the typological investigation of the sources also plays an important role.
