Sudan After the Referendum and Before the Split

On February 7, 2011, the official results of the South Sudanese referendum on self-determination were announced in Khartoum. 99 per cent of voters chose independence in the referendum, in which 98 per cent of the pre-registered southerners cast their votes. In the streets of South Sudanese towns and the southern capital, Juba, locals celebrated and danced to welcome the good news.
