Abstract

The fundamental characteristic of conservation organizations is that they protect nature, and one of the mottos of the Jane Goodall Institute in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is Health = Conservation! Yet, just like the 26 other members of the world organization, one of the main goals of this institute is to preserve the world's chimpanzee populations and their habitat. However, while most organizations operating in Africa achieve this through education, the situation in Congo is different. The deprivation of the population, poverty, disease and constant fear have made it necessary to resort to other means. The following article shows how the Jane Goodall Institute's community-based conservation program works in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and how determined the locals are, despite the difficulties, to protect the forest surrounding them and the animals living in it and preserve it for future generations.
