Abstract

We have proudly managed to edit probably the densest, at the same time, triple issue of the Hungarian Journal of African Studies. In the course of the past year we had the opportunity to select high-quality manuscripts for the first print issue of our twelfth volume, which – as usual – pays attention to covering historical and cultural topics, together with those contemporary international-global processes that shape the continent, influencing the everyday life of people inhabiting numerous regions of Africa. We provide the floor for discussion over both Turkey’s and China’s roles and engagements across the continent, after having learnt about the extension of the notion of security and the development of a security architecture by the African Union and all the regional integrative frameworks of Africa. Our Dear Readers can also pick pieces looking at the representation of Africa in the second half of the 19th century in several Hungarian weekly newspapers and magazines, as well as the possible connection between Count Benyovszky and slave trade. In addition, interpreting Emil Torday’s national and international recognition is also touched
upon. After learning about the activities of the Free French Air Forces in Africa we conclude our issue with yet another article on African music, this time, devoted to the slit drum type of instruments, the African tamtams. I wish all of you an enjoyable and meaningful reading experience, which could not have been put into this print format without the support of the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta – we are truly grateful for that, thank you!
