Abstract

Liberia, a former slave state resettled from the United States, is still remembered by many for its humanitarian and environmental disasters, illegal diamond smuggling, and bloody past wars. However, the exciting but above all democratic electoral battle between Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and former Ballon d'Or winner George Weah marks the beginning of a new, hopefully more joyful, era in the history of the West African country. In the African Studies series of women's portraits, this time you can learn more about the continent's first democratically elected female president, Mama Ellen of Liberia.
