Abstract

This paper examines the intricate dynamics of language and language policy in the Sahel region. It analyzes the role of major and regional lingua francas of the French-speaking countries of the region in social interaction, and explores continental language policies aimed at promoting social stability and security through the preservation of linguistic and cultural ecologies. Finally, the implications of recent coups and attempts at state reorganization for language policy are discussed.
