Abstract

The aim of the study is to contribute to the long-standing debate on the impact of urban expansion on peri-urban livelihoods by analysing some of the factors. The African author uses the example of the Tanzanian metropolis, Dar es Salaam, to analyze the opportunities offered by the economic centre in relation to the surrounding settlements (mainly villages). The growth of the former capital not only affected agriculture but also greatly transformed people's sources of income. Some were able to exploit the opportunities arising from the provision of services to the urban population, and others were not.
