The two mothers looked at each other, half laughing, half rolling their eyes, knowing how careful they were about the shadow. 30 years have passed since then. When in August 2008 I accepted the offer of the Max Planck Institute to spend six months as a research assistant studying bonobos in the rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the two friends looked at each other and understood each other without words – the sun still warmed their little brains.
