The history of Mali, the second largest and extremely wealthy African empire ever to exist, is adorned with legendary heroes and renowned kings. Still, the significance of the state is more complex than that. Besides presenting the reigns of Mansa Musa and Sundiata Keita, this study introduces the prominent role of the empire by reviewing the scientific and cultural significance of the Mali Kingdom and its gradual decline.
