Women's associations play an important role in contemporary Gambian society. This study examines the role of these women's associations in social welfare during the colonial period between 1925 and 1965. It assesses the extent to which politically independent associations were able to mobilize human and material resources to help those in need, particularly in the areas of health and education, during the Second World War.
