Abstract

The general enthusiasm, the pervasive national pride and unity that last year's World Cup brought are a thing of the past in South Africa. The sporting event, which ended in July 2010, was almost immediately followed by strikes involving millions. Although the world championship was good for the economy, the 3-4% annual growth did not provide coverage for the 8% public sector wage increase demanded by the unions. (Economist, 2010).
