After Gaddafi – Lybia Facing Political Challenges
Keywords:
Arab Spring, Islamism, International intervention, Civil warAbstract
Muammar Gaddafi ruled Libya, a large North African country with significant oil wealth and important ties with Italy, its former colonial power, for 42 years thus playing a crucial role in international relations. The study provides a detailed analysis of the events of 2011 and the weakening of Gaddafi's power, as well as their impact on Libya. It examines the key players in the political transition following the dictator's death, from Islamist groups to tribal leaders, uncovering the social fault lines that could shape the country's future. Additionally, the paper attempts to present possible scenarios, such as a democratic transition, the disintegration of territorial unity, the restoration of the monarchy, or the emergence of a state modelled after Türkiye or Iran, and the factors influencing these possibilities.
