Family Planning in Rwanda
Keywords:
Gender equality, Gender quota, Population policy, OverpopulationAbstract
An article about Rwanda regarding the proportion of female parliamentarians has already been published in the issue of African Studies entitled Women and Africa. In this case, we examine the female society of the country, which is considered the record holder for women's parliamentary quotas (currently 53.6 percent of Rwanda's parliamentarians are women (IPU, 2012)), from a different perspective. The state, which is three and a half times smaller than Hungary but has a population of 9.3 million, is one of the most densely populated countries in Africa (along with Burundi) and is also the most densely populated country on earth (Solo, 2008). For Rwanda, therefore, overpopulation, which Europeans consider a global problem known only from statistics, is tangible.
