Abstract

This study examines the aspects of touristic changes of the remaining castles and mansions of the historic
Somogy County. Somogy County was once characterised by large estates. This meant that the owners built a
castle or mansion at almost every centre of their estate. About 80% percent of these buildings remained and
were utilised many different ways throughout time. Prior to 1990 there were very limited opportunity to
utilise the castles and mansions as hotels but since the transition of 1989-90 many of the buildings were
utilised this way. In the 1990s a large boom was observed mostly based on the expected demand of urban
middle class people. The crisis of 2008 ended these endeavours and most of the castle hotels had to be
closed. The analysis shows that mostly the high standard prestigious hotels (Kutas-Kozmapuszta, Visz) and
the hunting mansions and hunting lodges (Rinyatamási, Kaszó) could remain and develop.
