Abstract

Transcarpathia is the most western province of Ukraine. This region is wealthy in touristic potential with
both natural and built heritage. Although tourism has become one of the most decisive economic sectors in
Transcarpathia, it is present only in a rudimentary form so far. Therefore, our research has raised two
questions. On the one hand, we wanted to know, what is the opinion of the Hungarians of Subcarpathia
about the regions’ tourism. On the other hand, how much are the given touristic possibilities exploited in the
Hungarian-populated areas of Subcarpathia. Thus, the main aim of our research was to assess the regions’
touristic attractiveness among the Hungarian population of the areas and to create a tourist map based on this information. Our work was based on an online survey which was posted on several specific Facebook
groups related to Transcarpathia. We used the QGIS program to create maps based on the survey data, while
the delimitation of the Hungarian-populated areas was based on the publication of Molnár J.-Molnár D.
(2005). The results highlight that in the minds of Hungarians living beyond the borders historical boundaries
and touristic attractiveness is important, which does not necessarily fit today's ethnic boundaries.
Furthermore, we concluded that there is a need for a comprehensive strategic development plan for the
Transcarpathian touristic products. To achieve this goal, there is a need both for specialists and financial
resources.
