This study explores Alcoholics Anonymous' twelve-step recovery program, illustrating the main message with the details of a composite case. The author approaches the process using the main concepts of dialogue, parrhesia, and rites of transition. Through analysing the relationship between the sponsor and sponsee, we learn about the ritual processes and communication characteristics of the AA community. During the recovery process, we can witness the birth of a second, recovering identity. The role of communication, parrhesia, and the creative power of dialogue lead to a new, previously unknown coherent narrative. Van Gennep's stages of separation, liminality, and reintegration can be clearly traced in the recovery process, with a particular focus on the second phase, the liminal state.
