Ethical guidelines and copyright

Ethical guidelines

Use of inclusive, non-discriminatory and non-offensive language. Further guidance may be found in the APA guidelines on inclusive language (https://www.apa.org/about/apa/equity-diversity-inclusion/language-guidelines).

Balanced, factual and unbiased discussion of the topic.

Permission must be obtained, where necessary, for the use of copyrighted material from other sources – especially third-party figures, tables, images, measurement tools, longer quotations, lyrics or other copyrighted content. The source, the rights holder and any applicable licensing conditions must be clearly indicated.

Plagiarism and self-plagiarism, including the use of text, data or ideas without appropriate source attribution, must be avoided. The editors will investigate suspected plagiarism or other forms of academic misconduct and may reject the manuscript where appropriate.

For empirical studies:

Independent research ethics approval must be obtained where this is necessary to protect the rights, dignity or integrity of respondents.

The research process must be transparent and traceable.

Anonymity and confidentiality may apply not only to individuals but also to organisations, institutions or localities if identification may lead to detrimental consequences.

Post-publication Notices, Retraction and Removal

Minor errors or omissions discovered after publication may be corrected by the journal. A problem is considered minor if it does not affect the scholarly integrity, main conclusions or ethical compliance of the publication.

Major errors:

1. The results of the study are not valid. Depending on the nature of the problem, a correction notice may be necessary, for example in the case of an unintentional author error, or the article may be marked as retracted, for example in the case of data falsification or plagiarism. The reasons for retraction are given in a separate statement.

2. The article will be removed if it violates the law or contains risky or harmful content.
