Autogenic training (AT) is an evidence-based relaxation method, effectively reducing tension, stress, and anxiety. The method can be used to reduce occupational stress and prevent burnout among helping professionals, whose work is often emotionally demanding.
This article uses interpretive case study as a method to demonstrate the use of AT for this purpose. It combines detailed phenomenological descriptions with practical reflections to provide an in-depth account of the process of autogenic training with a helping professional, an expert by experience in stable recovery from alcohol use disorder. The study illustrates how regular AT practice enhances the self-awareness of a practitioner who already possesses well-developed self-reflective skills, while also demonstrating how the method contributes to positive changes in both one's professional and private life.
