Abstract

The main goal of rehabilitation is to enable patients with chronic mental disorders to live an autonomous life in their own homes, receiving proper education, being involved in meaningful work, in social and intimate relationships, and fully participate in all other aspects of social life. Most of these persons, however, struggle with residual symptoms, cognitive deficits and psychosocial problems. Effectiveness of institutional therapies is reduced if the clients receive treatment only but the social environment does not. Introducing a complex, integrated approach into social care, involving families and concerned others as potential resources could bring more benefits. Clients should be enabled to solve everyday problems, manage stress and learn everyday skills. Creative techniques and therapies are important in relapse prevention and rehabilitation, and increase social recognition in the environment. Creativity as a basic human need is a source for self-expression and self-reflection. These therapies complement structured group therapies, inducing positive synergies. Creativity means play – in the process of play we distance ourselves from daily routines and our usual cognitive patterns.
