Abstract

Since the Middle Ages, the symbolic objects, insignia, and costumes – sceptres, chains, rings, seals, robes etc. – have symbolised the special status, privileges, and autonomy of universities. Their use was often linked to a ceremonial event. The Elisabeth University’s insignia were created in the early to mid-1920s. They were composed of traditional, well-known symbols of the academic sphere and the individual disciplines, as well as national (Hungarian) and local (Bratislava and Pécs) symbols. Their form was determined not only by the financial resources of the institution but also by the importance that community members attached to the identity constructions of the university. Therefore, the choice of colours, patterns and decorations etc. was not without conflict.
