Abstract

The violence that followed the disputed presidential election in Kenya in December 2007 left more than 1,300 people dead, and many more were killed in the subsequent crackdown. Mwai Kibaki, who was sworn in for a second term, initiated reconciliation talks with his political opponents, but the result was a weak coalition government that still governs the country today.
