Abstract

The German colonial administration imported Chinese and Indonesian workers to work on the tea plantations of the Usambara Mountains in Tanzania in the late nineteenth century because the colony was facing a severe labour shortage. According to Illiffe (1979), the problem was not solved, and by 1895, the Europeans were recruiting workers locally, from the Nyamwezi and Sukuma ethnic groups.
