Abstract

The revolutions that broke out in early 2011 in North Africa and then spread to Arab states in the Middle East brought fundamental changes to the lives of authoritarian regimes that had appeared stable for many years. The Tunisian regime of Ben Ali fell, Mubarak was forced to step down, the Gaddafi regime—at the time of writing this article—is likely living its final days, and the leaders of Algeria and Morocco can no longer feel secure in their power either.
