Abstract

The underdevelopment of the world's most disadvantaged continent, Africa, is partly due to the lack of communication infrastructure. Sustainable infrastructure development and the expansion of intercontinental connections are necessary for economic growth and addressing demographic challenges. This article, the first part of the author's study on telecommunications in Africa, examines the development of intercontinental communication infrastructure and its effects on the global stage, highlighting Africa's late integration and the importance of information and communication services. Through revealing the background it shows how the intercontinental communication network was formed, emphasising the role of submarine telecommunication and demonstrating the critical importance of developing infrastructure connecting Africa with other continents for the continent's growth and integration.
