Female Political Representation in Uganda.

Focus on the Elections 2016

Abstract

The African Studies Journal has already published an article about female political representation in the East African Community focusing on Rwanda. This study examines the Ugandan women’s presence in the country’s national parliament. According to the statistics of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Uganda holds the 34th place across the globe. Since the last elections took part in February 2016, 34 percent of the MPs are women in the Ugandan parliament (IPU, 2017). This article aims to analyze the major steps that have been taken to reach this (not only in sub-Saharan but worldwide terms) high ratio of female representation. We also examine how substantive is the Ugandan women’s political presentation.
