In the present study we aim to provide an insight how tourism service providers in Hungary reacted
to the coronavirus-crisis in the spring of 2020.
The first part of the study gives an overview of crises in tourism, with a special focus on health
crises. Next, we briefly present the impact of the coronavirus epidemic on Hungarian tourism based
on academic research on the field.
To analyze the reaction of Hungarian tourism service providers to the crisis, we collected data from
Hungarian tourism service providers in April-May 2020, with the goal, to see, what immediate
actions they took to prevent the coronavirus epidemic and/or to deal with the situation.
Based on the collected data, the study points out that tourism service providers faced a double crisis
situation connected to the coronavirus epidemic: providers had to deal with the health crisis, which
was accompanied by a financial-economic crisis. It is also important to see, that this two parallel
crises have different stages: while the health crisis can be described in five stages, the financialeconomic crisis has only three stages.
