It is generally known that the head of the medieval Hungarian church was the archbishop of Esztergom and two archbishoprics constituted it (Esztergon and Kalocsa). The present paper, following the debates over the royal churches, aims to determine the base and the origins of the jurisdictional controversies between the two archbishoprics until their end in the mid-thirteenth century and the hesitations of the papacy over jurisdictionnal questions in the same period.
