The Hajj and West Africa
Abstract
The pilgrimage to Mecca, known as the Hajj, is one of the most important pillars of Islam and a defining experience in the life of every devout Muslim. The article presents the main aspects and characteristics of the pilgrimage, complemented with various interesting details, explaining the symbolic actions and customs involved. It also provides information on the tourism and logistics behind this event, which attracts massive crowds. Additionally, it describes how certain Muslim groups from West Africa undertake the journey to Mecca on foot, and how this contributes to the exchange of cultural and economic traditions and experiences.
