Abstract

The 2013 autumn issue of the Hungarian Journal of African Studies (Afrika Tanulmányok) offers a real delicacy to the reader as the first written scholarly reaction has already come alive to an article (which was the first part of a two-piece study) in our previous edition. It is every editor’s dream that their periodical will not only become famous among readers, but that it also generates debates and compels to further elaborate on their topics. But not to play with the reader’s patience anymore, it was Mihály Sárkány who has already reflected on András Vojnits’ article about the two Teleki Expeditions – the one 125 years ago and the other, which was 25 years ago. Two determining figures of Hungarian Africanists appeared in the columns of our journal and what is more, both of them were members of the legendary scientific memorial expedition 25 years ago. Therefore, it is worth paying attention
to their opinion and remarks. It is a rare moment when feedback occurs so quickly since our quarterly usually deals with topics which motivates a limited circle of people in Hungary for constructive criticism. It is important, therefore, that in the future we grow our “tentacles” more and more towards the ‘outer world’, mostly towards Africa and the neighbouring countries to become capable of getting the attention of a wider audience and to motivate others to cooperate and to provoke more debates. The other articles of the current issue are also in line with this aspiration. Whether we think about the articles “Green Revolution and Africa”, or the “Italian style Black Hawk Down – the Battaglia del Pastificio, in the Africa Today column or a real historical specialty; Dingane’s Rule and the White Settlers, or the travel diaries of François Baron de Tott – which can be read in Hungarian for the first time – from the “Africa and Hungary” column. The current issue is traditionally closed with an interviews. We wish you a pleasant reading and a meaningful time with us.
