Keeping with Traditions in Esu
Abstract
The article gives an overview of traditional practices in Esu, a local kingdom in the mountains of North-West Cameroon. Concerning any of the rituals, happenings, events in the kingdom, it is always the Fon, who is asked for blessing. He—after becoming king—possesses supernatural knowledge, which he uses and practices for the sake of his kingdom. He does this as a Christian, and keeping with his community’s traditions can walk hand in hand with his Christianity. The article and the photos—taken during a field trip—intend to contribute to a deeper understanding of this duality and how much local culture and traditions determine everyday life in this African realm
