Hungarian Journal of African Studies: International African Studies academic outlet from Central and Eastern Europe

2025-11-17

Afrika Tanulmányok/Hungarian Journal of African Studies has been published continuously since 2007, issuing at least three numbers each volume, and it has become one of the most important scholarly fora of Hungarian African Studies. To increase the journal’s international visibility, two of our annual issues have been published entirely in English for a number of years, and—together with the Hungarian issues—are made accessible to readers on the unified and user-friendly OJS/PKP platform.

In recent years, interest in the journal has steadily grown both in Hungary and abroad: in July 2025, the abstracts had been viewed more than fifty thousand times, while the articles had been accessed 5,025 times. The number of citations is also rising dynamically. Since 2020 alone, the 535 studies published so far have been cited 247 times, while MTMT lists a total of 308 citations indicating that Afrika Tanulmányok has become a recognised professional source not only domestically but internationally as well. With increased visibility, the number of submitted manuscripts has also grown.

Alongside contributions from experienced researchers and senior experts, the journal is open to junior scholars, including BA and MA students, thereby fulfilling an educational and mentoring role. The articles published in the fields of politics, economics, history, migration, ethnography and culture also demonstrate the journal’s scholarly diversity. We place particular emphasis on encouraging the publication and networking of doctoral students and their work through the journal.

The editorial board aims for Afrika Tanulmányok to have an even stronger presence on social media in the future and to further enhance its international recognition and reach. Its mission remains to challenge one-dimensional representations of Africa and to support the strengthening of meaningful public discourse about the continent, its regions, countries and peoples in Hungary and beyond.
