Abstract

Seasonality is still a major problem for Hungarian tourism in the second half of 2010s, especially for Lake
Balaton, which is one of the major tourist destination in Hungary. After the reviewing the literature of
tourism seasonality, the study aims to quantify the seasonality of Balatonfüred with the help of the Giniindex,
and to analyze the seasonal trends of the second most significant tourism-generating town in Balaton
over the last decade. Quantitative data were supplemented by interviews with service providers, tourism
management and visitors. Although Balaton is still not a four-season destination, our conclusion is that the
season is gradually increasing in recent years. Service providers and tourism management are actively
working on the elongation of the season, but the effectiveness of the event offering, which regarded as the
most important element for reducing seasonality, is still questionable.
