Abstract

After decades of sustainability propaganda it is still not clear what exactly sustainability and sustainable tourism mean
on different spatial scales. Sustainable tourism, as all sustainability issues, is a strategic and systemic challenge.
Sustainable tourism planning is not possible without first mapping stakeholders’ especially professional decision
makers’ relevant value systems. In this respect, the empirical part of the study tries to fill a gap in current tourism
literature. Results call for careful consideration. There are significant problems of asynchronicity. One such
asynchronicity can be found between modells and recommendations in the literature and the actual sustainability
priorities of destination management professionals who should be key actors of sustainable tourism. On local and
national level natural environment as a pillar of sustainability has minimal weight in the sustainability priorities of
DMO professionals, which compared to recommendations in the literature and startegic documents also creates
asynchronicity. Without managing asynchronicity problems through a systems approach it is poinless to talk about
sustainable tourism.
