In the Villány wine region, wine tourism and ethnicity are connected in a characteristic way. Throughout
history, several ethnicities left their traces in this region. This study examines those prominent historical
turning points, when the ethnical composition and number of population of the given region have changed.
The ethnical and cultural shifts played a significant role in the development of wine making technologies,
wine types, as well as in wine plantation and cultivation systems. The ethnical character of the Villány wine
region is closely related to the German minority. This study outlines the characteristics of the German
minority's mentality, which represent the key to the economic growth of the Villány region. The ethnic
roots, traditions and the cross-generational mentality determined both the development of wine tourism and
the success of the Villány wine region during the last couple of years.
