Abstract

In this study, I deal with the two important pillars of the modern tourism experience, smart
tourism and the related tourism digitalization and its smartphone presence, by processing
international literature sources in the Web of Science database and related Hungarian
publications.
In adapting the general digitisation models, I highlight that both distribution and the entire
tourism process have been digitised in recent years thanks to several technologies that have
transformed tourist behaviour and tourism products. By defining the terms, I also point out the
relationship between digitalisation and smart tourism.
In the paper, I also discuss smartphones and smartphone apps and their marketing solutions in
more detail. I synthesize the smartphone solutions and related literature sources, linking them
to the tourism consumption process, in a model that can serve as a basis for future primary
tourism research.
